Sparks & Scoops: Celebrating the Fourth of July with Flavor and Fun

Fourth of July in Maine is always one of the most magical times of the year. The sun lingers a little longer, your feet are bare, your drink is sweating, and every moment feels like the start of a summer memory. This year is even more special as the country celebrates its 250th birthday.
Maybe you’re getting some sun at the beach with family, catching wakes on a boat with college friends, learning the art of grilling BBQ with Grandpa or dancing to live music at a local bar with the love of your life.
Or maybe, you don’t have plans.
If that’s the case, don’t worry. We’ve collected Fourth of July celebrations happening all along the Midcoast: full days of parades, live music, tasty food, community traditions, and (of course) fireworks to close out the night. Whether you’re looking for a full lineup of festivities or just the perfect spot to catch the sky come alive, there’s something here for everyone.
No matter how you choose to spend your Fourth, it all leads to the same moment. The sun begins to fade and the night lights up. Fireworks are a classic when it comes to the Fourth. Everyone’s eyes turn to the sky; the air fills with oohs and ahhs, and for a little while, strangers and friends alike are connected by a mesmerizing light show.
But it doesn’t end there. There’s only one thing that pairs seamlessly with a perfect summer day and a sky full of fireworks (besides a burger, a cold margarita, and your favorite people) … and that’s ice cream.
Whether it’s an afternoon pick-me-up, a cool down after an intense game of Spike Ball, or a pre-fireworks sweet treat, ice cream is a can’t miss on the Fourth.
So along with the celebrations and fireworks, we’ve also rounded up the best places to grab that cold, creamy fix.

Set Yourself Up for a Sparkling Night
- Early isn’t early enough— Firework nights turn even the calmest towns into madness. Give yourself more time than you think so you can avoid driving in circles.
- Be mindful where you set up camp— A slight elevation or on the water = best views
- That summer outfit will betray you when the sun sets— It always feels warm… until it doesn’t. Maine evenings, especially coastal ones, cool down fast. Don’t let the shivers distract you from the fireworks.
- It doesn’t have to be exclusively fireworks— The best part of the day might happen before the boom. Live music, food stands, people-watching vibes, don’t miss it.
- Look up not down – The best view is in the sky, not in your phone. Don’t miss the moment trying to capture it.
However you choose to celebrate, the magic of the Fourth is in the moments that happen along the way. It’s the smiles, the flavors, the music, and the awakening of the night sky. As fireworks illuminate the coast and ice cream turns your hands sticky, there’s no better place to take it all in than right here on the Midcoast. So, grab your people, find your spot, and take in every moment of this once in a generation 250th Fourth of July. We promise you won’t want to miss it.
